    The Adventure Began

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to look back first.

We wouldn't be here without our ancestors and we always want to pay homage and give thanks to them. We are deeply grateful to Anton Kopf + Mary Basler for laying the foundation that would become a part of our future, too. In 1888 when Anton immigrated to the United States with his brother from Baden, Germany (now Austria), he - at some point- took a farm hand job with Mary's parents, Frank + Margaret (Koehler) Basler. Mary's parents owned the property that our homestead sits on. There is much lore, but from what we understand Mary had a dowry associated with her marriage. The couple married in November 1897- and Anton used the dowry money to build her a home established 1898 on this land they were given by her parents.

And what a home it was! At the time, our homestead would have been considered very impressive by its features. From the size of the home alone and the extra thick joists they used for the frame, to the multiple porches and balconies, ornate lead glass windows, and the double stone foundation,  to the high ceilings and double chimneys,  she was built like a fortress and was a stately, remarkable site on Rural Route 1.

Anton + Mary would go on to have 4 children, Joseph, John, George, and Arnold. Arnold, who went by Arno and was born in November 1908, is Nathan's great grandfather. His generation- including his wife Elfreida whom he married in January 1930-  inhabited the house next with their children: Clarence, Anna Mae (who passed at birth), Elizabeth, Jane, Margaret, and Alan (Buster.) Clarence, who was born in November 1931 is Nathan's grandfather and he married Albertine Buechel in April 1956 and their family was the next generation to live in the homestead. Nathan's grandparents would have 7 children: Audrey, Daniel, Lisa, Anna Mae, Marian, Marie, and Judy. Anna Mae, born in August 1956, is Nathan's mom. She, sadly, left this Earthly world on Feb 6, 2025.

And so that brings us here. Nathan is the 5th generation descendent of the Kopf Family Homestead. We are humbled to carry the torch and continue the property's long family history.  We have been honored to tend the land for the last 7 years that raised Nathan's entire lineage and we look forward to continuing to restore his family home to as much of its historical luster as we can.

Thank you for taking this journey with us!
